Doing Non-Profit & NGO
internship with AIP

NGO & Non-Profit Internship

An international Non-Profit internship in Asia is one of the most satisfying opportunities you can have. It takes effort and motivation, but the reward you get in return is of a much higher value. The happiness you get from helping others is defined by Aristotle as “Beatitudo,” this is the happiness that comes from seeing other people being happy and helping other people.

There are a lot of different NGOs in Asia, varying from the improvement of less fortunate women and children to helping the improvement of the environment. There is always a sector in the NGO industry which you can find interesting and appealing to be a part of.

When you do your internship with Asia Internship Program, you can be sure that we will arrange your NGO internship based on your requirements. With over 450 partners in our network, we are able to find the perfect NGO company in Asia that matches your field of interest.

Past AIP NGO interns have been involved and worked on the following projects:

  • Coordinating with Administration, HR, and Finance departments to support the organization on training events and meetings.
  • Maintaining networking with non-profit external partners and other organizations.
  • Preparing situation analysis and submitting reports of meetings/field visits.
  • Maintaining own records systematically and establishing systems to deliver the requirements of the role as needed.
  • Providing effective support to program operations and monitoring humanitarian situations.

Note that all AIP interns are given a personal supervisor who will train, monitor and guide you throughout your international internship experience.

Internship tasks will vary from company to company, as well as intern to intern. These are only examples of tasks that were carried out from previous interns.

AIP Non-Profit & NGO Internship Scope Areas

Depending on their internship requirements and the available internship positions in our partner companies, prospective interns may work in any of the following (or other) disciplines during their non-profit and NGO internship with AIP:

  • Operational: Operational NGOs are usually involved with the delivery of services, provision of emergency relief, fixing of environmental issues and enhancement of public welfare. They aim to achieve change on a small scale directly through projects.
  • Campaigning: These types of NGOs are made up of an efficient group of professionals whose objective is to achieve large-scale change promoted indirectly through influence of a political system. Campaigning NGOs usually handle issues that have to do with women’s rights, children’s rights, and human rights in general.
  • Public Relations: Public relations NGOs rely on healthy relationships with members of the public to achieve their objectives. These types of NGOs include charities and foundations, and they use intensive PR campaigns to raise funds and employ conventional lobbying techniques with governments.

AIP Non-Profit & NGO Internship Benefits

Depending on the type of organization and the nature of your work, an international internship will be of benefit to you in so many ways.

You will get to contribute to a social or environmental cause, such as changing lives, making the environment cleaner and safer, planting trees, building structures, helping to improve education and other systems, etc. This can be a life changing experience from which you can acquire a lot of useful skills.

One major skill you can gain from a non-profit & NGO internship in Asia is the ability to handle responsibility.

This is because at an NGO (especially a smaller one where financial and human resources are more limited), it is likely that you will be responsible for a lot more and make a more significant impact, than, say, when you intern at a large company in a corporate field.

You will generally have access to larger tasks and more say in decision-making processes. While this might appear challenging to you as a new entrant into the field, it will take you out of your comfort zone, teach you about leadership and teamwork, give you more insights into your capabilities, build your confidence, and empower you to develop your potentials.

In terms of character development, interning in a non-profit & NGO is a huge opportunity to build your character, and develop valuable qualities such as patience, optimism, humility, and empathy. In fact, an internship offers the most value when it comes to character building and self-development.

Contrary to what some may think, working for a non-profit instead of a for-profit organization does not make your work experience any less valuable for your future career.

An internship can be an outstanding addition to your resume even if you intend to change career paths in the future because it tells employers that you are a person of character who has also handled responsibility.

The Demand for Non-profit & NGO Professionals Worldwide

Volunteerism has become much more necessary today in the face of constantly increasing community needs and economic burdens on non-profit organizations. According to the results of the 2015 State of the Non-profit Sector Survey carried out by the Non-profit Finance Fund:

  • 76% of non-profits reported an increase in demand for services for the seventh year in a row

  • 71% report that the needs of clients go unmet when they are unable to render services to them

  • The number of organizations that were unable to meet the demand for services and programs increased from 44% in 2009 to 52% in 2014

This data clearly shows that there has been a constant increase in demand for volunteers in the non-profit and NGO sector, as well as a space which urgently needs to be filled by young professionals like you

The Role of Non-profits and NGOs in an Economy

Due to the fact that non-profit organizations are similar to for-profit ones in terms of day-to-day operations, and as a result usually require professionals in other fields such as accounting, project management, IT, and so on, to help run them, they represent a steady source of employment and the jobs they create help to sustain an economy.

Apart from employing specialists in non-profit and other fields, NGOs make use of third-party products (such as computers) and services (like phone and internet services) in the course of their day-to-day operations, just like other businesses.

This, of course, generates revenue for the manufacturers and distributors of such products and services, and makes a positive impact on the economy.

Non-profits and NGOs also fuel other sectors of an economy indirectly by providing their employees with an income source.
